I was an adjunct professor at George Washington University and taught review courses for students preparing to take the CFP exam for 15 years. When someone would tell me that their college degree was not in business or finance, I would tell them that it didn’t matter. What matters is having the right heart. Everything else can be learned. That is the science. The art of practicing financial planning begins with having the right heart.

Ms Houlihan is a past member of the advisory board for the Journal of Retirement Planning and the editorial board for Asia Financial Planning Journal. She hosted the PBS series “The Financial Advisors.”
